The cornerstone of my commitment as a winegrower is the cultivation of life, an approach deeply anchored in agroecology.

Every one of my actions, each of my choices, is guided by the profound desire to preserve and reinforce our ecosystem and strive for lasting balance between the vines, the soil, and man. My method of working is inspired by the wisdom of our ancestors.

I pose questions incessantly, always think twice, and am learning constantly. In everything I do I seek to reveal the essence of the terroir, and capture the soul of the place. That is why I choose to make single vineyard wines from specific plots in AOC Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas, and Hermitage.

I am proud to be an independent winemaker, refusing all compromise, in order to create sincere wines that are faithful to my vision as a committed and dedicated winemaker.

NURTURING LIFE

Bourdon sur une fleur dans les vignes

My philosophy is founded on a global approach where soil, vines, vegetation, and biodiversity form an interconnected ecosystem.

My estate, which is certified organic, is one of the pioneers of agroecology in the southern Rhône Valley. This holistic approach is the bedrock of my wines. By replacing insecticides with sexual confusion, and using preparations of selected plants with care, I draw on nature’s own innate wisdom to preserve the integrity of my terroirs. The soils enriched by cover crops become a refuge for fauna, form natural defences against erosion, and are storehouses of life, regenerated by natural mulching.

But my ambitions don’t stop there. I dream of an eco-designed, autonomous cellar, integrated harmoniously into the landscape, with a green thread of hedges and trees to reinforce the ecological continuum.

I also place great importance on collective action, as an active member of national and local committees devoted to the promotion of a bold agroecological transition. Convinced of the importance of each and every action, I firmly believe that each parcel we preserve takes us a step nearer to a more sustainable and harmonious future.

Portait de Sébastien Michelas et son chien

My name is Sébastien Michelas, an independent winegrower and founder of the Domaine.

My family have worked the land for four generations, at Mercurol, where my elders first planted orchards, and then vines, and it is from them that I have inherited my deep love for the earth. After 20 years as vineyard manager and cellarmaster on the family estate, I decided to follow my own star, motivated by a deep ambition to reveal with precision the emblematic plots of my vines in AOC Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas, and Hermitage. Through an exacting parcel by parcel approach, I am focussed on producing sincere, authentic wines, faithful to my vision of viticulture that is in harmony with nature.

Today, this adventure has taken a more personal turn with the arrival on the estate of my eldest son, Kylian.

Together we are constructing the basis of an enduring family enterprise, with the hope that both of my sons, Kylian et Tom will, in the long-term, continue and deepen this commitment to the protection of our environment. Working together with them, passing on what I have learnt, and sharing my passion, is to offer a future to this project that perpetuates my values of sincerity, integrity, and humility.

THE SOUL OF THE PLACE

‍With this new project, my desire is to bring out all the qualities and the diversity of my vineyard plots in the appellations of Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas, and Hermitage. Through the unique composition of its soils and its specific orientation, each individual plot has its own extraordinary tale to tell, and it was this geological complexity and this range of expressions that led me to adopt a single vineyard approach.

This very demanding method allows each of my wines to bear the signature of its terroir, like a stamp of authenticity.

MY WINES

The wines from my estate are the fruit of patient, thoughtful work, inspired by the principles of agroecology. These wines, all certified organic, highlight the character of the iconic vineyards in AOC Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas, and Hermitage, with respect for nature and the fragile balance that gives them life.

In Crozes-Hermitage diversity abounds in all its glory. Chapon, distinguished by its red clay, gives powerful, elegant wines, whilst Les Pichères, rich in clay and rolled stones, creates wines of remarkable freshness and finesse.  The stony, sandy soil at Les Grapiats, that lies over a seam of red clay and limestone, produces two distinctive white wines. And finally, Bellevue, a more recent terrace carved out of sandy earth, gives juicy, generous wines. When blended, these four terroirs are the pillars of our red Bellegrapière.

In Cornas the terraces of decomposed granite at Les Côtes produce intense wines of great depth, where power goes hand in hand with finesse.

And at the foot of the legendary Hermitage Hill, Les Dionnières gives us plush, voluptuous wines, that reflect the warmth of its fully south facing position and the richness of its fertile soils.

VINTAGES

Each vintage writes a new chapter in the story of my Domaine. With this brief resumé I hope to convey how, year after year, the climate, the soil and the vines enter into a dialogue to give life to wines that reflect the great wealth of our terroirs.

2024
The 2024 vintage was produced in the context of complex climatic conditions, starting with a mild winter followed by a particularly warm period in April which caused the vines to start shooting. But volatile weather that started on 25 April, and a significant drop in temperatures in May, created intense phytosanitary pressure up to 15 July that required extra vigilance to preserve balance in the vines. Flowering, which took place around 30 May, nevertheless proceeded without a hitch. Between 1 October 2023 and 30 September 2024, I recorded 1,048.3mm of rain, which maintained a certain hydric balance in the vineyards. Hot, dry conditions in August created good concentration in the grapes before they were picked, a little later than usual this year, between 17 and 25 September, when the berries had attained perfect maturity.
